Istanbul is where most visitors land, and Ephesus is what many of them most want to see. The two are about 450 km apart in a straight line, which is close enough to tempt a day trip and far enough that the day trip needs planning.
The day trip: how it actually runs
It works, it is done every week of the season, and it is a long day.

Fifteen hours for roughly five on the ground. Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on how much time you have in the country.
When the day trip is the right call
- You have four or five nights in Türkiye, all based in Istanbul, and Ephesus is a genuine priority.
- You are travelling for work and have exactly one free day.
- You would rather not repack and change hotels.

When to stay a night instead
If you have six nights or more, one overnight transforms the experience and costs very little extra.
Fly to İzmir in the afternoon, sleep in Selçuk or Kuşadası, be at the Ephesus gate as it opens the next morning with the site nearly empty, and have the whole afternoon for Şirince, the museum or the coast before an evening flight back.
You get the best hour of the day at the site — which the day trip structurally cannot give you, because you cannot land early enough.

Airport notes that matter
- Two Istanbul airports. Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian. Getting to the wrong one is a two-hour mistake. Check which your domestic flight uses.
- Allow real time for Istanbul traffic. An hour to the airport at 05:00 is fine; the same trip at 17:00 can take two.
- Domestic security is quick, but Istanbul Airport is enormous and the walk to the gate is genuinely long.
- Book the return flight late. An 18:00 departure rather than 16:00 buys you a whole extra site at Ephesus, and the difference in fare is usually small.
What about the bus or the train?
The overnight bus from Istanbul to Selçuk exists and takes around nine to ten hours. It is inexpensive and Turkish intercity coaches are comfortable by most standards, but arriving at dawn without having slept properly is a poor preparation for a walking day in the sun.
There is no direct high-speed rail on this route. Fly.
How much Istanbul do you need?
Two nights is the honest minimum for the old city — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı, the Cistern and a Bosphorus boat. Three lets you add the Grand Bazaar properly, Chora, or a walk through Balat and Fener.

The shape we would suggest
Five nights: Istanbul 4, plus one Ephesus day trip.
Seven nights: Istanbul 3, Ephesus area 2, then either home or on to Cappadocia.
Ten nights: Istanbul 3, Ephesus area 3, Cappadocia 3, and one spare for the thing you did not plan.
The spare night is the most valuable one in any Türkiye itinerary. Something will be worth an extra day, and it is usually not the thing you expected.
