These are the two places almost every first Türkiye itinerary contains, and they sit at opposite ends of the country — Ephesus on the Aegean coast, Cappadocia in the central Anatolian highlands, roughly 750 km apart.
Done well, linking them costs you half a day. Done badly, it costs two and a lot of goodwill.
Do not drive it
The overland route is nine to ten hours of driving on good roads through scenery that is pleasant rather than remarkable. Broken over two days with a stop at Pamukkale or Konya it is defensible; done in one push it eats a day and arrives exhausted.
Fly. It is inexpensive domestically and it converts a lost day into a lost morning.
The airports
Ephesus is served by İzmir Adnan Menderes (ADB), about an hour from Selçuk. Cappadocia is served by Kayseri (ASR), roughly 70 minutes from Göreme, and Nevşehir (NAV), roughly 40 minutes but with far fewer flights.
Most routings connect through Istanbul. Direct İzmir–Kayseri services exist seasonally and are worth checking, because they remove the connection entirely.
Practical advice: prefer Kayseri for flight choice unless a Nevşehir time suits you exactly, and always arrange the transfer at the Cappadocia end in advance — the airports are a long way from the valleys and taxis are not plentiful at night.
Which order?
Ephesus first, Cappadocia second is the shape we recommend, for one specific reason: hot air balloons.
Balloon flights in Cappadocia are weather-dependent and cancellations happen. If Cappadocia is at the end of your trip with only one or two mornings available, a cancellation means you go home without the flight. Give Cappadocia three nights and you have three chances.

Two itineraries that work
Seven nights — the efficient version

Fly Istanbul → İzmir, then İzmir → Kayseri, then home from Kayseri or back via Istanbul. Tight but comfortable, and nothing important is rushed except Istanbul.
Ten nights — the version people are glad they chose
Istanbul 3, Ephesus area 3 (adding Priene, Miletus and Didyma or Pergamon), Pamukkale 1, Cappadocia 3. The Pamukkale night breaks the journey naturally if you decide to travel overland for that leg.
What each place actually needs
- Ephesus: one full day for the site and its immediate surroundings; two if you want the Ionian sites or a village day. Our two-day plan sets out the shape.
- Cappadocia: three nights minimum. One for the balloon buffer, two for the valleys. Their honest arithmetic on this is worth reading.

Seasons: they are not the same climate
This catches people out. Ephesus is Mediterranean — hot and dry in summer, mild and wet in winter. Cappadocia is a highland plateau at around 1,000 metres — genuinely cold in winter with snow, and cool at dawn even in summer, which matters because balloons launch before sunrise.

The mistake to avoid
Trying to add Pamukkale, Antalya and the coast to the same seven nights. Türkiye is larger than it looks on a map — it is roughly the distance from London to Rome across, and internal flights, while frequent, still cost half a day each with transfers.
Two destinations done properly beat four done from a vehicle window. If you have a week, choose Istanbul plus one of Ephesus or Cappadocia, and save the other for the trip you will want to take afterwards.
