Stay in Selçuk if you came for the ruins and want to walk to dinner past a Roman aqueduct with storks nesting on it. Stay in Kuşadası if you want a swim at the end of each day, a wider choice of hotels and restaurants, and a seafront to walk along.
Both are sensible. They suit genuinely different trips, and the twenty kilometres between them matter less than people assume.
Which is better for visiting Ephesus?
Selçuk, clearly. It is 3 km from the site rather than 20, which means you can be at the gate as it opens without a long transfer — and the first hour after opening is worth more than any other part of the day. Selçuk also puts the museum, the basilica and the Temple of Artemis within walking distance of your hotel.
The case for Selçuk
- Proximity. Ten minutes to the Upper Gate by taxi. You can go early, come back for lunch, and return in the late afternoon if you want.
- Everything else is walkable. The Ephesus Museum, the Basilica of St John, the Isa Bey Mosque, the fortress and the single column of the Temple of Artemis are all a stroll from the centre.
- Atmosphere. A working Turkish town rather than a resort — a Saturday market, tea gardens, family-run pensions, and the aqueduct with its storks in spring.
- Food. Small, good and inexpensive. You eat what the town eats.
- The train. Selçuk is on the İzmir suburban line, which makes arriving without a car easy.
The case for Kuşadası
- The sea. The single biggest difference. After three hours on hot marble, a swim is what most people actually want.
- Choice. Far more hotels at every level, from small places in the old town to large resorts along the coast.
- Evenings. A long seafront promenade, a marina, many more restaurants, and a bazaar that stays open late.
- Families. Beaches, water parks and space to run around — a better fit if the ruins are one item on a broader holiday.
- Onward travel. Ferries to Samos, and the cruise port if you are joining or leaving a ship.

The third option: Şirince
Twenty minutes up into the hills above Selçuk, Şirince has a handful of small guesthouses in restored stone houses. Very quiet once the day visitors leave, genuinely beautiful, and a twenty-minute drive from everything.
Choose it if you want somewhere memorable to sleep and do not mind steep cobbled lanes. Avoid it if anyone in the party has trouble walking on uneven ground. A local account of the village is at Şirince: stone lanes, fruit wine, long lunches.

The honest summary
Most first-time visitors book Kuşadası because it has more hotels and a beach, and enjoy it. Most people who come back for the archaeology stay in Selçuk the second time.
If you have three nights and cannot decide, split them: two in Selçuk for the site and the museums, one in Kuşadası for the sea. There is a fuller two-day shape in two days around Ephesus, and more on each town at Kuşadası and Selçuk.
