Ephesus sits about 20 kilometres from the Kuşadası cruise berth, which is a drive of roughly 25 minutes in normal traffic and 35 on a heavy cruise morning. It is one of the shortest port-to-major-site transfers anywhere in the Mediterranean, and it is the reason ships call here at all.
How long does it actually take?
Allow 25 minutes each way as your planning figure, and 35 in high season. The road is good dual carriageway for most of the way, and the only reliable delay is the cluster of coaches leaving the port between about half past eight and half past nine.
The three ways to get there
Taxi
There is a rank immediately outside the terminal. Agree the fare before you get in — that is normal practice here, not a sign of distrust — and settle the waiting arrangement at the same time.
The single most useful thing you can say: ask for the Upper Gate (Yukarı Kapı, sometimes signed as the South Gate) for the drop, and arrange collection at the Lower Gate. Ephesus is built on a slope, so entering at the top means you walk the whole ancient city downhill. Left to themselves, taxis default to the Lower Gate because it is nearer the main road — and you will climb the site in the sun, then walk back down to find your driver.

Dolmuş — the cheap way
Shared minibuses run from Kuşadası to Selçuk for a few lira. From Selçuk you take either a second short dolmuş toward the Ephesus turn-off or a taxi for the last stretch. It is inexpensive and characterful, and it puts you at the wrong end of the site with a walk to the entrance. Fine if you are unhurried; a poor idea on a tight port call.
Private transfer or guided day
The premium buys three specific things: the vehicle repositions from the Upper Gate to the Lower Gate while you walk, so nobody retraces a step; entrance tickets are bought in advance so you skip the queue; and someone is watching your ship's clock rather than yours.

What about the taxi fare?
We deliberately do not print a figure. Fares move with fuel and the exchange rate, and a number typed today would mislead someone reading in four months — the same reason we never print entrance prices and link to the live entrance-fee page instead.
What is stable is the shape of it. A one-way transfer is modest. A return with two or three hours of waiting costs considerably more than twice the one-way, because you are paying for the driver's morning. Once waiting time is in the price, the gap between a taxi and a private guided day narrows a great deal — worth knowing before you decide.
The timing that actually matters
For a ship docking at 08:00 with a 17:00 all-aboard, a comfortable shape is: ashore by 08:20, at the Upper Gate by 08:50, walking the site until about 11:15, the Terrace Houses until noon, then lunch and one more stop, back at the port by 16:00.
Aim to be back ninety minutes before all-aboard rather than thirty. The road from Selçuk is a single main route and it does occasionally back up. The full arithmetic, including short port calls, is in the cruise day timing note.

That last row is the one people argue with, and we would rather say it plainly: three hours each way leaves under two hours on the ground and no margin at all. Save Pamukkale for a land trip — there is a fuller note on the Ephesus to Pamukkale drive.
